Shoppers describe Philips’ device as a “lazy barista’s dream machine,” because it avoids any complicated coffee-making steps — even the clean-up is simple.

Best yet, this sleek-looking machine is compact in size, meaning it’s the perfect benchtop addition if you’re working with minimal kitchen space.

Now 20 per cent off in Amazon’s Prime Day sale, you can get your hands on it for just $479 (usually $599).

Below, 7You’s tech expert Sonny Loudon reviews the affordable bean-to-cup Philips Baristina coffee machine — so be sure to keep scrolling.

There is a sliding scale of at home coffee enthusiasts — on one end is the pod patrol, they want their coffee fast with one button press.

On the other end is the manual mob, they obsess over the small details and carefully select their beans, grind setting etc forever tinkering to get the most out of their morning coffee.

The Philips Baristina sits right in the middle of these two camps, offering freshly ground beans for a fraction of the fuss.

If you are after something that offers better coffee than your standard pod machine but isn’t as intimidating as a fully manual espresso machine then the Philips Baristina might just be for you.

The setup

Plug it in, give it a rinse and fill it up!

I found it very easy to setup the Philips Baristina, a scan of a QR code took me to a quick start guide that was as simple as can be.

A quick rinse, fill up the tank and grinder then run a flushing cycle by holding down the boost button.

Normally a “setup” section in an article like this is a bit longer, but that genuinely is all the setup there is.

The coffee

To brew an espresso with the Philips Baristina you insert the portafilter and slide across to the right, select either espresso or lungo and off it goes!

The Philips Baristina grinds the beans straight into the portafilter it then slides the portafilter back over where the coffee is tamped and extracted.

I tried both the espresso and lungo options and found both to be lacking a bit of oomph, that’s where the boost button comes into play.

I would recommend using the espresso mode with the boost function for best results.

Repeating the same steps as before but this time pressing the espresso followed by the boost button, I was able to get a much stronger espresso from the Philips Baristina.

The lungo option was still watery and lacking, if you were wanting a long black I would recommend pulling your espresso onto some hot water from the kettle.

This will give you a more balanced cup of coffee.

The cleanup

Being a mostly enclosed system, the Philips Baristina does a great job at keeping your bench clean compared to a more traditional espresso machine.

Ejecting the spent coffee was easy enough, the portafilter has an ejector button to help push the puck out but I found it sometimes needed some extra persuasion.

I had concerns about the small drip tray on the Philips Baristina but was surprised at how little it actually dripped.

I will say you should keep a clean cloth nearby to wipe out the portafilter and portafilter holder, some rogue coffee grounds can tend to hang on and make their way into your coffee.

The verdict

If you have been part of the pod patrol and are looking for a simple machine to lift your coffee game to the next level then the Philips Baristina might be for you.

I would recommend using the espresso mode with the boost function for best results.

The Philips Baristina is a very stylish addition to any kitchen and doesnt ask for too much bench space either, and for $479 in the sale? It’s the ultimate steal.
